As with most other freelancers, student Self Assessment rules apply the general principles. You should normally report gross trading income if you make more than £1,000 in a tax year. Even if your profit is too small to make a bill of Income Tax, it does not make you exempt.
Self-employment income is normally reported if trading receipts (before expenses) are over £1,000. Do not look at only whether you’ll owe tax, but at your overall situation.
Tutoring, graphic designing, photo shooting, writing content or handling social media accounts for clients are some of the freelance roles one can take on. Doing work only during holidays does not absolve any reporting requirements.
The threshold is applied throughout your trading. Total trading income is £1,300, from £700 tutoring and £600 design work.
However, not all the payments that you make into your account are business income. If funds are moved from one account to another within the same customer, it should not be classified as a customer payment.

The trading allowance £1,000 may allow small amounts of trading income to be excluded from taxable income or may be used to deduct the trading income from taxable income. This is not the Personal Allowance.
Where income is over £1,000, you will be able to claim the trading allowance or allowable business expenses as a deduction. You do not get both of these.
There are allowable expenses of £600, for instance, that a student can claim out of his/her £4,000 of earnings from freelance illustration. The allowance option would result in £3,000 in contrast to £3,400 by paying out actual expenses.
If the allowable expenses were £1,500, then if that was deducted, there would be £2,500. So the better choice is determined by the numbers, however.
Please verify eligibility prior to selection. Some income, such as income from your employer or a company you control, is restricted. Also excluded from the allowance is income generated from partnership trading. Please refer to HMRC’s trading allowance guidance for the conditions and exceptions. GOV.UK
Whether you choose to do this one way or the other, keep your records. Our guide to what expenses you can claim on Self Assessment can help you identify costs to review before deciding.
It is not a requirement to complete a return in order to calculate tax payable. One student may thus have a filing requirement but no tax bill.
In 2026/27, the Personal Allowance is the standard allowance, which is £12,570, but may be different depending on eligibility and individual circumstances. This allowance applies to all relevant income, not per job. GOV.UK
If you earn £5,000 per annum in freelance work and your allowable expenses are £1,200, how much profit are you making? Your profit for your business is £3,800.
Normally you would not have any Income Tax to pay if you have no other taxable income and the full Personal Allowance. But your trading income is above the normal reporting amount.
Suppose you also have an income of £11,000 from work. The “profits” from your freelance work, combined with those wages, should be considered, even if taxes have already been withheld from your wages.
The calculation of income tax does not answer all questions; for example, the rules are different for National Insurance.
Students employed by an employer are also taxed according to the normal rules. Student income is not exempt from taxes just because it is from students. GOV.UK

Freelancing is a common student side hustle, but side hustle tax UK rules still apply. Maintain records of business expenditures, employment earnings and customer receipts throughout the year. It is easier to make small, regular changes than build an entire new house around exams.
Useful recordkeeping procedures are:
Be sure to scrutinize the deductions from the platform. A platform may charge a fee, which reduces the amount of money which a customer receives into his bank account to £90, when he really paid £100. Do not assume that the bank deposit is the sole indicator of the situation.
Potential expenses depend on the nature and purpose of the spending. Relevant software, business insurance and qualifying materials may be allowable.
Just using something does not make it a business expense. If a laptop is to be used for coursework, for the purpose of entertainment and also freely employed, the business application and relevant regulations should be taken into account.

Register if needed, gain access to the HMRC services and collect the information for the tax year in question. The return and the payment of any bill are two separate acts.
The 2026/27 tax year runs from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. If you have to report your self-employment for that year, the regular due dates are:
In specific cases, you might be filing at a different time, as noted in any notice received by HMRC. Registration does not constitute your return. The dates relate to income in 2026/27. Income for 2025/26 has a different schedule, including the normal deadline of 31 January 2027, online. GOV.UK
Our guide to how to register for Self Assessment in the UK covers the registration process.
For submission steps, see how to complete a Self Assessment tax return.
To prepare for payment, read how to pay a Self Assessment tax bill.
Before submission, ensure that totals are accurate with supporting records and that employment income and the tax deducted are accurate. Keep return and submission confirmation.
Do not just wait for the bill, put aside some money to pay it. Payments on account for the next year may also occur according to your liability.
If you’re not sure what is unclear, get tax return assistance from Self Assessment tax return support, and they will help you determine what needs to be sorted out before they file.
Can I Apply for an Exemption if I Am a Full-Time Student?
No. The general tax principles apply to full-time students as they do to other taxpayers with employment or self-employment income. Tax is only payable if you have income and allowances, and if you have certain circumstances. A Self Assessment return is a separate requirement depending on your trading receipts and other factors.
Can I Claim a Separate £1,000 Allowance for Each of My Freelance Activities?
No. The trading allowance is usually not given separately for each trading activity or platform, but rather it is a trading allowance for your total eligible trading income. Check the threshold after adding up your relevant income. Where it is appropriate, maintain separate records, but do not give each customer account a new allowance.
Is It Advisable to Wait Until Graduation to Register?
No, graduation does not end your tax liabilities. Check the tax year in which you earned the income and the registration deadline that follows it. As you are studying, it is easier to register and file later, especially if working freelance after your course, as you can keep records as you go.
